Latinas of Vision
What is Latinas of Vision?
Latinas of Vision is a gender-specific, culturally proficient after school program led by Latinas to serve Latinas designed to engage young Latinas around issues of teen fertility, sexually transmitted diseases/infections, leadership development and political empowerment.
Funded by the Denver Teen Pregnancy Prevention Partnership, our Latinas of Vision program is at Kepner Middle School, West High School, and Abraham Lincoln High School.
Why are we doing this?
Research has shown that Latina youth face high disparities in area of teen births compared to other race/ethnic groups. Current statistics show that in 2005, 62% of all babies born in Colorado were to young Latinas. In fact, in 2002, teen birth rates per 1,000 women were 119.4 for Latinas, more than twice the rate for African-American/Black women (57.3 per 1,000) and more than four times that of White/Caucasian women (26.2 per 1,000) within the state of Colorado.
Why Latina youth?
Such disparities highlight the importance of cultivating a voice for young Latinas, to educate themselves and make a change in their communities. The reality necessitates increased concentration of collaborative efforts that serve young Latinas specifically.
