Celebrating Roe by Ensuring True Access for All

COLOR emphasizes the need to reimagine what it would look like to truly create access to abortion without barriers or judgment.

(Denver, CO) – Statement by Karla Gonzales Garcia, Policy Director of Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR) on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

“Today marks the 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case affirming the right to abortion. The fact is that we know too many people are unable to get an abortion when they need one because of the different obstacles our communities face.

For decades, politicians have pushed a political agenda: make abortion impossible to access and perpetuate systemic racism through our laws and regulations, disproportionately impacting those who already face obstacles in exercising their human rights: Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities; those struggling to make ends meet; young people; people living with disabilities; rural community members; immigrants; and LGBTQ+ individuals.

We need laws, programs, policymakers, and judges that respect the dignity and decisions of all people, support the right to live in safe and healthy environments and work to eliminate barriers to self-determination and bodily autonomy.

It’s critical that we destigmatize abortion and eradicate cultural and societal forces that prevent people from making decisions about their bodies, families, and futures without interference or discrimination. Ultimately, it’s clear that Roe is not and has not ever been abortion access for all.

Even though abortion is technically legal in all 50 states, it is not actually accessible – for marginalized communities, that has been true for decades. The law favors keeping people pregnant against their will. It polices people’s bodies and criminalizes their decisions. This is not the role of government and policymakers should not have this much control over a person’s life. We should be able to make our own decisions about our own bodies and futures.

We must prohibit lawmakers from imposing their personal beliefs into policies that actually create more obstacles to care. We must get rid of policies, including one right here in Colorado that denies coverage of abortion for people who use public health programs. Essentially, this sends the message that low-income people do not have the right to make their own decisions because of their socio-economic status. We must also address the added barriers young people experience by forcing them to involve a parent.

Young people can and should have power and control over their bodies, especially when they are pregnant. Yet, politicians systematically strip away young people’s ability to make decisions about their bodies, as well as their rights to access reproductive healthcare and education. It’s time to use our voices to change that!

This year, if we want to honor and celebrate Roe, let’s reimagine what it would look like to truly ensure that someone seeking an abortion, can get care without judgment or barriers. Period.”

Punto.”
